The
USA was to the early Stones a blank screen on which dreams could be
projected. Mick and Keith
have been conspiring to re-invent the USA, a giant
topographical fantasy, hardly
less enveloping than Bertolt Brech's or Kurt Weil's
imaginary vision of America
in the opera "Mahogonny". It's become such a part
of our mental furniture that
we recognize it immediately as, at least, a parallel
universe. Naive in the extreme,
often exotic as a Japanese western,
it's still funkier than the
one we've got...
